Playing with the ancient Japanese textile tradition of katazome, I create images on traditional and nontraditional surfaces, from delicate natural fibers to strong architectural materials. The process involves applying a rice-paste resist through hand-cut stencils, then adding natural dyes and earth pigments for color.

I use everyday images that catch my eye: a moth that clings to the door frame, a strawberry blossom happened upon while picking berries, my daughter walking down the road, or simply textures made with brush and ink. I also use traditional motifs altered in scale or use, as well as images inspired by other textile traditions.
